Electronystagmography (ENG) or Balance Test Instructions

This testing is designed to give your physician information about the source of your dizziness. The ENG is a painless procedure that requires approximately 1 hour to complete. Although many people experience some dizziness during the test, the dizziness is of short duration and all signs of dizziness should have subsided by the completion of the test. If you are able, it is often advisable to arrange for transportation to and from the facility.

In order to receive the best test results, you should carefully follow these instructions:

  1. Discontinue all medications* for one (1) week prior to the testing date EXCEPT those medications taken for your heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, seizures or asthma. Discontinue allergy pills, sleeping pills, antihistamines, decongestants, tranquilizers, diet pills, nerve pills, anti-dizziness pills, sedatives, muscle relaxants, diuretics, barbiturates, etc.
  2. Remove contact lenses before exam.
  3. Dress comfortably and wear flat or low-heeled shoes.
  4. Wash face thoroughly (do NOT wear lotion, cream or make-up on forehead or around eyes).
  5. No solid food or milk for 2-3 hours before the test; eat lightly.
  6. No coffee, tea or cola after midnight on the day of the test.
  7. No aspirin or medications containing aspirin two days before the test.
  8. No alcoholic beverage or medications containing alcohol for two days before the test
  9. No smoking for 2-3 hours before the test.

*Note: Check with your physician.

Medication can be resumed immediately following the ENG testing procedures.
