Fiberoptic Laryngoscopy

Fiber-optics is a new sophisticated technology that allows light to be carried around corners. When combined with an ingenious mechanical system that allows the viewing tip to be directed around a 150 degree axis, the examining physician can see into places heretofore inaccessible to his eye. After a simple topical anesthetic is applied to the nose and sometimes into the mouth, a thin flexible tube, only 3.5 mm in diameter is inserted through the nose into the back of the nasopharynx where it is well tolerated. From there various parts of the nose and throat, voice box, trachea and even some sinus cavities can be examined.

Ordinarily these areas are evaluated routinely and easily using various sized mirrors inserted into the back of the mouth. However, certain factors sometimes exist that make mirror examination impossible or inadequate. It is for these special circumstances that this Fiberoptic examination is recommended – sometimes providing the need for hospitalization and even general anesthesia:

  • an excessively active gag reflex
  • anatomical variations, normal or abnormal
  • lack of patient cooperation because of excessive nervousness, anxiety or unconsciousness
  • lack of cooperation because of age (too young or too old)
  • the need to evaluate critical structures in a perfectly relaxed state or in a dynamic state, such as during swallowing, coughing, or speaking.

Unfortunately, the fiberoptic examination (sometimes called endoscopy) is costly – this is because the instrument itself is not only very expensive to buy but it is expensive to maintain as well. In addition, its use requires significant training and skill both for preparation and performance.

For many of the reasons stated above, fiberoptic-endoscopy is considered a coverable procedure by most third party providers. If you are planning to request reimbursement from your medical insurance company and/or Major Medical carrier, payment might be expedited by attaching a copy of this explanation as well as a copy of your bill to each form that you submit.

This may be listed on your insurance company's voucher as a surgical or diagnostic procedure. Some insurance companies differ in their terminology.

There is no preparation for this procedure. You may eat and drink prior to the procedure, but since you will have had an anesthetic spray prior to this procedure, it is important that you have nothing to eat or drink for one half hour following the procedure.
